The most beautiful rooftops in Avignon: our summer 2026 selection

From the first warm days of June to the last breaths of October, Avignon reveals its most beautiful panoramas from its rooftops. Between medieval ramparts, gothic bell towers, and glazed tiles, the rooftops of the City of Popes offer a spectacular face-to-face with heritage. Here is our selection of hidden addresses and elevated experiences for an unforgettable summer 2026.

The Avignon Grand Hôtel: a pool suspended facing the ramparts

Our rooftop hosts one of the rare panoramic pools in intra-muros Avignon, located on the 6th floor of the hotel with direct views of the UNESCO-classified medieval ramparts. Reserved for our resident guests to preserve the tranquility of the site, the pool is bordered by a terrace bathed in Mediterranean sunlight. You can swim, read in the shade of parasols, or extend an aperitif in front of the golden stone of the ramparts that ignite at sunset. The bar offers a short but refined menu.

The experience, in practice

• Access — daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. approximately, from April to October depending on the weather

• Booking — reserved for resident guests

• Ideal moment — between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. for the sunset over the ramparts.

• Atmosphere — Monday from late August to early October, aligned with the Luminessences show at the Palais des Papes.

Hotel Cloître Saint-Louis: the historic 14th-century rooftop

A five-minute walk from the Avignon Grand Hôtel, our partner establishment occupies the former Jesuit novitiate of the 14th century and hosts a unique rooftop pool with views of the bell towers and glazed tile roofs. The contrast is striking: after crossing the gothic cloister and its courtyard with century-old plane trees, you take the elevator to emerge above the rooftops of Avignon. The terrace is even more intimate, a true well-kept secret, ideal for lovers of architectural authenticity. In the evening, the restaurant "Les Cocottes Saint Louis" sets its tables under gothic arches — one of the most spectacular dining settings in the city.

The panoramic terraces and bars of the historic center

Beyond our two addresses, Avignon has several terraces worth visiting for an aperitif or dinner facing the Palace. Here are our recommendations, tested and approved by our concierge.

La Mirande — The prestigious enclosed garden

5-star palace housed in a 14th-century mansion, La Mirande opens its garden terrace at the foot of the Palace. The setting is sumptuous, the menu crafted by a starred chef. A high-end experience to book for a birthday, a marriage proposal, or a special occasion.

Les Halles d'Avignon — The popular rooftop terrace

The green roof of Les Halles, designed by botanist Patrick Blanc, is freely accessible and offers a different, more urban and contemporary view. Ideal in the early evening, after the market, for a relaxed drink with friends — popular and refreshing atmosphere.

Our tips for enjoying Avignon's rooftops

• The magic hour — arrive 45 minutes before sunset (between 8:45 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. from June to August) to capture the golden hour on the ramparts.

• Mistral — avoid terraces fully exposed to the north on windy nights; prefer sheltered patios like that of the Cloître Saint-Louis.

• Reservation — for rooftop gourmet tables, book at least 7 days in advance in summer, 15 days during the Festival.

• Attire — in July, coolness only arrives after 10 p.m. — think of a light stole for your shoulders.
