A two-day weekend is enough to grasp the soul of Avignon — provided you know where to go, when, and where to start. Here is our insider itinerary, designed by the Avignon Grand Hôtel team, to experience 48 hours of essential discoveries without ever facing the crowds.
Friday evening: a gentle arrival
6 PM — Arrival at Avignon Grand Hôtel
From Avignon TGV station (2h40 from Paris), it takes 12 minutes by taxi or shuttle to reach our hotel at the foot of the ramparts. If you arrive at Avignon Centre station, it's less than a 5-minute walk. The team welcomes you 24/7, your room is ready from 4 PM.
7:30 PM — Aperitif on the rooftop facing the ramparts
Start with the best introduction: a drink at the hotel's rooftop bar, facing the golden stone of the ramparts that glow at sunset. Rosé from the Côtes de Provence, homemade tapenade, Nyons olives — the first three gestures of the South.
9 PM — Dinner at Cocottes Saint Louis
Our partner restaurant, a five-minute walk away, is set under the gothic arcades of the Saint-Louis Cloister (14th century). Refined local cuisine, wine list focused on the Côtes du Rhône, exceptional historic setting. Reservation recommended.
Saturday: Avignon intra-muros
8 AM — Market at Les Halles and local breakfast
Start with the Avignonnais ritual: a morning visit to the Halles of Place Pie, a covered market open from 6 AM. Oysters and a glass of white at Poisson Gourmand, coffee at La Table d'Angèle, artisanal pastries. The plant-covered facade by Patrick Blanc is worth a visit in itself.
10 AM — Palais des Papes with the HistoPad
Head to the Palais before the tourist groups arrive. Allow 2 hours with the HistoPad, an augmented reality device included in the ticket that lets you see the rooms as they were in the 14th century. Don't miss the Clementine Chapel, the Pope's private apartments, and the Grand Tinel. Skip-the-line ticket essential in high season.
12:30 PM — Lunch on Rue des Teinturiers
This cobbled street lined with plane trees, punctuated by the old water wheels of the Sorgue, hosts several quality addresses in an absolutely photogenic setting.
2 PM — Pont d'Avignon and Rocher des Doms
After lunch, cross the Pont Saint-Bénezet (4 arches out of the original 22) and let the spirit of the times carry you on the famous bridge. Then head up to the Rocher des Doms, a garden offering the best panorama of Avignon, the Rhône, and Mont Ventoux on a clear day. Free admission.
4 PM — Museum pause: Musée Angladon
Away from the crowd, this 18th-century mansion houses the only Van Gogh visible in Provence ("Railway Carriages", 1888), as well as Cézanne, Degas, Picasso, and Modigliani from the collection of fashion designer Jacques Doucet. An hour is enough. Modest paid admission.
6 PM — Return to the hotel and rooftop pool
The best time for the pool: the light fades, the ramparts take on their golden hue, the other bathers are back to prepare their evening. A truly privileged moment.
8:30 PM — Starred dinner, author's bistro, or private dinner at the hotel
Depending on your mood, two options. The grand experience: La Mirande (Michelin-starred, sumptuous setting, reserve 15 days in advance), bistro in the cobbled streets of Avignon, or private dinner via room service on your room's terrace.
Sunday: escape to Provence or wandering
Option 1 — Excursion to Châteauneuf-du-Pape
20 minutes by car, the village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a must for wine lovers. Visit Château La Nerthe (historic estate, guided tour, and tasting), head to the ruins of the papal summer castle for a 360° panorama, lunch at Verger des Papes (terrace facing the vineyard).
Option 2 — Pont du Gard and Uzès
The 1st-century Roman aqueduct (48.77 m high, UNESCO-listed) is 30 minutes from Avignon. Swimming possible in the Gardon in summer. Complement with Uzès and its duchy, 15 minutes away. Half a day is sufficient, perfect for a departure in the late afternoon.
Option 3 — Wandering in Villeneuve-lez-Avignon
On the other side of the Rhône, Villeneuve offers the Chartreuse du Val-de-Bénédiction (largest charterhouse in France), Fort Saint-André and its 14th-century ramparts, and above all, the best panorama of Avignon from the Philippe le Bel Tower. Accessible in 10 minutes by car or 20 minutes on foot from the hotel.
5 PM — Departure: Gare Avignon Centre or TGV
On Sunday evening, our team helps you reach your train with peace of mind. If you have time before departure, a last drink in the hotel's garden is a must to savor the weekend's discoveries.
What you'll miss (to come back better)
• The Luberon — our neighbors, the most beautiful hilltop villages of Vaucluse — Gordes, Roussillon, Sénanque — deserve a full day.
• Les Baux and Saint-Rémy — Les Baux-de-Provence and its Carrières des Lumières, Saint-Rémy and the asylum where Van Gogh was interned — a day, 35 minutes from Avignon.
• Arles — the Roman Arenas, the Luma Foundation designed by Frank Gehry, the city of Van Gogh — 20 minutes by TER.
• The Camargue — pink flamingos, white horses, wild beaches — a full day from Avignon.
